The barrier properties of plastic film refer to the ability of plastic packaging materials to prevent small molecule gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapor, fragrance, and other organic solvent vapors from passing through.
The indicator used to indicate the size of plastic barrier capacity is transmittance. The volume or weight of small molecule substances that can pass through a certain thickness of plastic products under certain pressure, temperature, and humidity conditions per unit time and per unit area.
The lower the transmittance of the material, the higher its barrier ability.
The presence of oxygen is the main factor leading to a decline in the quality of the vast majority of foods.
The negative impact of oxygen on food quality is multifaceted:
Oxygen causes the oxidation of fats and oils in food, resulting in the production of peroxides. This not only causes the loss of nutrients, but also releases odors and even toxic substances.
Oxygen can accelerate the oxidation and browning of food, leading to the oxidation of pigments and causing food to darken and lose its original bright color.
Oxygen provides a breeding ground for microorganisms in food, accelerating the process of food spoilage.
The commonly used barrier materials in China now include aluminum foil, PVA, EVOH, PVDC, PEN, PA, PET, etc. The most commonly used high barrier materials are PVDC and EVOH, while PA and PET have similar barrier properties and belong to medium barrier materials.
