What is Block Bottom Pouches?
Block Bottom Pouches have completely flat bottom and so they are known as “Block Bottom Pouches”. These are also known as “Box Pouches or Quad Seal Pouches”. The flat bottom allows all kinds of products for sturdy storage. It holds more weight in compare to Bottom Gusset Pouches.
Block bottom pouches are designed with a flat rectangular base, allowing them to stand free-standing on retail shelves. It is also commonly known as a flat-bottom pouch and is widely used in the retail industry. The pouches come in different colors, shapes, sizes, and designs. In addition, the bag is also used for the packaging of different forms of non-edible and edible products.
Benefits of Block Bottom Pouches
Multipurpose
Block bottom pouches are very flexible as they are used in a wide range of markets including pharmaceutical, food and pet food packaging.
Functionality
Block bottom pouches have several features and properties that improve their functionality. The variety of handles, seals and closure options enhances the consumer-friendliness of Block bottom pouches. Hanging holes help easily display Block bottom pockets on retail shelves.
Product Protection
Block bottom pouches have a barrier layer that protects products from elements such as moisture, UV rays, dust, and heat.
The barrier layer consists of a combination of materials forming a laminated layer.
Travel Convenience
The block bottom pouch is designed for portability and flexibility. They are easy to manage, transport and store. Sachets can also be carried from one place to another. Whether in the park, at home, in a school setting, or in a hospital.
Regular internal valve bag
Common internal valve bag, the general term for the valve port in the bag. After packaging, the packaged powder pushes the valve port outward so that the valve port is squeezed and closed tightly. Play the role of preventing powder leakage. In other words, the inner valve port type valve bag is a packaging bag that can prevent the powder from leaking as long as the powder is filled in.
Extended internal valve bag
Based on the regular internal valve bag, the valve length is a bit longer which mainly used for heat sealing for one more secure lock.
Pocket valve bag
The valve bag with a tube (used when filling powder) on the bag is called a pocket valve bag. After filling, the outer valve bag can be sealed by folding the tube and stuffing it into the bag without glue. As long as the folding operation can achieve a sealing degree that will not cause problems in actual use. Therefore, this kind of bag is widely used for manual filling. If there is a need for further complete sealing, a heating plate can also be used for complete sealing.
Kraft paper bag
The widely used raw material for powder packaging bags is paper. According to cost, strength, ease of use or handling, etc., the packaging bags constitute various standards.
The number of layers of kraft paper generally varies from one layer to six layers according to the application, and coating or PE plastic / PP woven fabric can be inserted in for special requirements.
Application of Block Bottom Pouches
Block bottom pouches are a fantastic way to promote products. How? Well, take a packet of cookies for instance. Sure, everyone is drawn to a standard pack on the shelf, but when they’re in a block bottom bag? That’s a whole different kettle of fish. block bottom pouches give you a snippet of the product; just enough to have you wanting more. With a cookie for instance, you can actually see how good it looks. If that isn’t enough to encourage you to make a purchase, we don’t know what is.
Whilst many argue that presentation is insignificant when it comes to a gift, what with recipients tearing open the packaging in record breaking time, we disagree. Why? The way something looks can completely transform its value. Imagine giving a friend a bag of sweets in a paper bag for his or her birthday. It would look like you’ve scampered across to the local newsagents, shovelled some sweets into a bag and been done with it. Present some sweets in a block bottom paper bag and it adds a retro touch. These bags are the ultimate way to beautifully package a present, be it sweets, chocolates or even pasta for those who don’t have a sweet tooth.
These small tokens are given to guests as a gesture of appreciation for their attendance. block bottom pouches are the ultimate way to display your wedding favours. What can you put inside these bags? Sugared almonds are a classic choice, or for a more modern approach you could fill a bag with chocolate-covered strawberries. Wedding favours presented in this way are certain to cause much oohing and ahhing, which is exactly what you want to hear on your big day!
Times have changed. Whereas before, children would have Tamagotchis and teddy bears, now it’s all about having tablets and selfie sticks. Therefore it’s no surprise that instead of having standard party bags with the latest film characters printed on them, children want posh party bags! Fill block bottom pouches with all things nice and those children will feel extra special.
If you’re one to not put things back where they belong, a block bottom bag may be your saviour. Why? Forget putting jewellery in a jewellery box where it’s out of sight and in a place that you probably won’t look! Safely store your jewellery in a block bottom bag. Tie the bag with a piece of ribbon or a string of beading and you’ll have an alternative place to keep your most valuable items. Not only will it look pretty on your dressing table, it’ll save hours of you trying to find that necklace!

Finishing is done to the last print job to improve the pouch’s appearance and print graphics.
To improve the appearance of the Block bottom pouch on the shelves, you can use any of these finishing options:
Varnish
Varnish can be done using UV light.
It helps in improving the appearance of printed images, graphics or letters.
Matt
This finish gives the Block bottom pouch a smooth and non-glossy surface.
It softens the appearance of an image or graphic.
Gloss
This glossy finish is done using spot UV varnish.
It helps in enhancing the appearance of printed images/graphics.
This finishing helps the Block bottom reflect light and colors appear more vivid and richer.

What Materials are used to make Block Bottom Pouch?
Block bottom pouch is designed and manufactured using high-quality materials.
The materials are combined to meet the essential needs of purpose for
Kraft Paper
This is a natural and compostable material which can be easily degraded in the environment.
It also has excellent barrier properties to protect the products from spills, pests, UV light, oxygen, and moisture.
Aluminum Foil
This material provides good barrier properties as well as opacity to protect the products from the effect of light.
Plastic Polymers
The below plastic polymers provide excellent properties such as rigidity, stability, flexibility, moisture-proof, tensile strength, and transparency among others.
The Stand-Up Pouch Vs. Block Bottom Bag the Difference
Picking out the right packaging format can be tricky. You need to attract a large amount of customers in a short amount of time. Your package needs to be your “spokesman” on the store shelf. It should distinguish you from your competition, as well as convey the quality of the product inside.
Two of the most common formats used for packaging pet food are the Stand Up Pouch and Block Bottom Bag.
Stand-Up Pouch
Custom printed foil stand up pouches for pet foodThe stand-up pouch has been the “go-to” bag for several decades. When it was introduced, it revolutionized the packaging market. It came standard with a zipper, tear notch and you could add a hang hole if you desired. No more header cards. In addition to the consumer friendly features, it offers two large panels (front and back) for printing. And most importantly, it stands up!
Different bottom gussets?
Bottom gusset styles for the stand up pouchThere are two different bottom gussets used when manufacturing the stand-up pouch, Doyen and Plow bottom. The weight of the product going inside the bag will determine which style of bottom we recommend using. The doyen bottom is used for lighter weights, usually 2oz-1lb, while the plow bottom is utilized for 2lbs & up.
The stand-up pouch is often the cheaper of the two formats.
Block Bottom Bags
Block bottom bag illustrationThe block bottom bag (also referred to as “flat bottom bag”) is the next evolution in packaging. Utilizing all of the best features of the stand up pouch and quad seal bag, the block bottom bag is unique in that, it gives you 360 degrees of real estate for printing your company information, logo, feeding instructions, etc. Whether the bag is standing up or lying flat, the block bottom bag is designed to get your product noticed at every angle.
Side Panels
Side panels on a side gusseted bagThe side panels of the block bottom bag are made from a separate web of material. This means they can be made out of an entirely different substrate than the front, back and bottom of the bag, I.e. Clear. This can give you an edgy look over the traditional square or oval window on the front or back of the bag.
Pocket Zipper
Pocket zipper, zipper closure system for the block bottom bagThe pocket zipper offers the convenience of a zipper with the benefit of easy filling. However, you have several other zipper options available as well. You can read more about the zippers here.
What are the Production Control Points Of Square Bottom Bags?
The unique structure of square bottom bags determines that it is more convenient to package three-dimensional goods or square products. This kind of bag not only takes into account the packaging meaning of traditional plastic bags, but also fully expands the new packaging ideas, so it is now widely used in people's daily life and production.
Heat-sealing temperature
The heat-sealing temperature range of heat-sealing materials is a key factor affecting and controlling the quality of heat-sealing. Printing substrates with good temperature resistance, such as BOPET, BOPA, etc., can increase the production rate by increasing the heat-sealing temperature; Printing substrates with poor temperature resistance, such as BOPP, try to use a lower heat-sealing temperature; and ensure the heat-sealing strength by increasing pressure, reducing production speed or selecting low-temperature heat-sealing materials. If the heat-sealing temperature is too high, it is easy to melt and extrude the heat-sealing material at the heat-sealing part, reducing the heat-sealing thickness and increasing the thickness and unevenness of the weld edge.
Heat-sealing pressure
The heat-sealing pressure is provided by the pressure spring on the bag making machine. The size of the heat-sealing pressure is related to the performance, thickness, heat-sealing width, etc. of the composite film. Heat-sealing materials have a higher activation energy, and the temperature increase has a greater effect on the decrease in their viscosity. Therefore, the required heat-sealing pressure is relatively small. The molten material at the heat-sealing part should be prevented from being extruded to reduce the heat-sealing effect. PE and PP are non-polar materials with very low activation energy and high required pressure, which is beneficial to heat seal strength and interface sealing.
Heat sealing speed
The heat sealing speed reflects the production efficiency of the bag making machine and is also an important factor affecting the heat sealing strength and appearance. The faster the heat sealing speed, the higher the heat sealing temperature should be to ensure the heat sealing strength
Cooling conditions
The cooling water of the bag making machine is generally tap water or circulating water at about 20C. Excessive water temperature, insufficient pressure of the cold sealing knife, poor cooling water circulation, insufficient circulation volume, etc. will lead to poor cooling and decreased heat sealing strength.
Number of heat sealing times
Good heat sealing generally requires more than 2 times of heat sealing. After the bottom of the flat-bottom bag is formed, there are up to eight layers. The heat sealing strength is not enough in the middle of the bottom material, and too many heat sealings are prone to root breaking. Generally, there are 5 sets of horizontal heat sealing devices for flat-bottom bags.
Heat sealing knife gap
The heat sealing knife gap refers to the pressure distance of the predetermined heat sealing pressure transmitted to the heat sealing surface when the upper heat sealing knife contacts the bottom plate. At the same film thickness and the same heat sealing speed, the heat sealing knife gap is small, the heat sealing time is relatively short, and the heat sealing strength of the product will be reduced. Generally, the heat sealing knife gap is set at 1.0~1.5mm, which is related to the film thickness, transmission performance, bag making speed, etc.
Tension control
The tension control device is used to keep the film flat, easy to fold, intermittent feeding uniform, and reduce the shrinkage and warping of the heat-sealed part of the bag. The tension of the bag making machine is generally 0.1~0.15MPa. Flat-bottom bags require high tension control between the main film, accordion material, and bottom material due to the complex bag making process and long film travel distance.
