Pet Food Packaging: A Dual Play of Environmental Protection and Personalization
Due to the impact of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), changes in bag materials have led to the emergence of recyclable single material packaging options. Carollo pointed out that in the face of the transformation of pet food packaging, Clevertech, as the main project coordinator and product processing contractor of the pet food production line, needs to address the challenges of improving speed, reducing system space occupation, and increasing machine production efficiency. The plant-based cans developed by Sonoco in collaboration with German pet snack startup DoggyLove, and the woven PP (WPP) bag manufacturing plant developed by UFlex in Mexico, are examples of the industry's shift towards paper and eco-friendly packaging.
Industry experts from Clevertech and Innova Market Insights have observed that although soft bags and plastic packaging still dominate globally, consumer preferences and regulatory changes, particularly in Europe, are accelerating the shift towards paper and single material solutions. According to Innova Market Insights, the global launch of pet food increased by 21% from 2020 to 2024, reflecting consumers' preference for paper packaging, although plastic remains the primary material.
Clevertech positions bags as the most popular form of pet food packaging, with their flexible single dose multi-layer solution, making them an ideal choice for wet pet food. Luca Carollo, Head of Business Development and Marketing Communications at Clevertech, said, "This special packaging is made by compounding different materials (including recycled materials) and has lower costs compared to cans, cans, or cardboard boxes." In the European market, demand for small and single pack packaging is increasing, while in the Asian market, bagged and canned packaging are equally popular and smaller in size.
